Do the American have any car safety regulations like the UK MOT test?

The only examples of American cars I have is from those that shown on programmes in the Uk. Some seem to be real heaps, rusty with bits and bobs falling off. Some of the ones on Pimp My Ride are shocking, they have windows and doors missing!

Is it really Ok to be driving around in America in a car like that or is this artistic license on the part of the television show makers?

Do you need any kind of regular car safety check like the MOT test we have here in the UK?|||That totally depends on the individual state. My state requires no smog test or inspections of any kind. That being said an officer can still fine you for driving around a heap thats falling apart in the road but so long as nothing is falling off and all your indicators are working your good to go here in Arkansas.|||the tv show depicts vehicles that are literally falling apart yes but can they be driven on the streets that way ? NO. They must pass a mechanical fitness inspection in order to be plated and insured. Things like brakes, frame, Steering must be to specification, there must be working seat belts, no missing panels or glass. Lights and directional lights must be working. Some States require a fitness inspection every year.|||You can pretty much "roll your own" around here. There are some requirements, seat belts, bumpers, wind shield, and a few others. Some states have stiffer regulations and "smog" tests" too. Some states have "safety inspections" that are required and some have both.

But only California (that I know of) has the socialist mindset to do as your government does.
