In Ontario, if someone gives you an old car with no plates on it, do you have to get it safety tested?

Suppose someone gives you their ten year old car. They no longer use it. It appears in good shape and seems to run well. I know you will need insurance. But when you get new plates from the Ministry Of Transportation, will you have to get the car safety tested before they give you plates?
