Do car seat in car bases offer extra safety for a child or are they purely for convenience?

My travel system didn't come with the in car base but i'm happy to buy the base separately. Was just wondering if it adds any extra safety or is it purely to make it easier to just click the car seat in place|||I have no statistics to offer, but I think that if nothing else using the infant seats with the base makes them safer because you are more likely to take your time and ensure the base is properly buckled in ONCE (or several times, as you need to move it) than you are to make sure that the car seat is buckled in properly each and every time. It is quite easy to get distracted- none of us are perfect- and we could put our children's lives in danger if a small distraction caused them to not be properly buckled. Also, instead of just the seat belt holding the car seat in (in open slots), the seat belt holds the base through a closed pathway (mine also has a backup method to secure the seatbelt) AND the metal locks on the base hold the car seat in place.

Yes, it is convenient to use the base but I feel it also adds to teh safety of the car seat.|||Personally I think it is convenience. We lost ours when we moved, and are planning on using the same car seat with our baby(unless advised otherwise). Granted we don't drive hardly anywhere these days...I think it is just convenient anyway.

I have used our car seat both ways, and each way, the seat was strapped in tightly and would not move. When hooked in correctly, a seat(any seat) should stay put.|||It's very convenient! You don't have to strap the car seat in everytime you use it, you just snap it into the base and you're ready to go. The car seat can be used without the base, but i think using it with the base offers a more secure installation. The thing about using it without the base, it that you still have to get it at the correct angle everytime you use it. It's going to be a hassle for you to that every time you want to go somewhere. The base also tends to get the seat in tighter, with a better fit.|||convenience, and somewhat safety.

If you plan on taking the car seat out with the baby inside of it, then the more you buckle it in or buckle it out, the more likely you are to make a mistake. Like, if you're 90% accurate (a great rate) then 1 out of every 10 times you buckle the seat in you're going to make a mistake. So the base adds in safety in that the person can just keep the base locked in place and then put the car seat in. Less chance of failure.

Also, some car seat bases allow you to adjust the angle of the car seat. This removes the need for things like rolled up towels or car seat angle adjusters, which can compromise the safety of the seat. Since you NEED to make sure the car seat is at a 45degree angle (or else the breathing of the baby is compromised and their safety in a crash is compromised) this feature is safer to make sure that the car seat is always at a good angle.

If you plan on leaving the car seat permanently in the car however, and it's not one of those that the base adjusts the angle, then having the car seat outside of the base and permanently attached in the car is safer. This eliminates someone leaving the baby to sleep in the car seat (not only dangerous but can be deadly), keeps people from putting the car seat on a shopping cart (again, not only dangerous but can be deadly), and keeps people from relying on the handle of the car seat to carry the baby around (handles have had a high failure rate, so it can be dangerous.) So basically it eliminates 3 of the more common dangers that people put their babies in when using an infant carrier (leaving them to sleep in it, using it outside of the car, carrying it around a lot...) Also, some of the recent recalls in car seats have to do with their bases malfunctioning, and you wouldn't be allowed to use a base with those specific car seats.

Add: Every safety test I've read about has tested the car seat without the base as being safer than with the base. It's mostly consumer error that tends to make it safer, and those bases that adjust the angle without having anything added to it.|||well if it did not come with one u should call the company and tell them causes they all come with the base.. its a lot faster to clip them in a out of a car and if they are sleeping you don't have to disturb them and you don't have to worrier about buckling them in each time just snap them in the base and your done..|||When used correctly, they do not add any safety.

However, most people don't use a carseat without a base correctly. It is hard to get the belt tight enough (to where you have less then 1" of movement) when the baby is sitting in the car seat while you're tightening it down. Most people don't get the right recline level , and they also don't realize you have to put the handle down on most car seats when used without the base (even ones that allow you to have it up with the base).

It shows you in your manual how to use it both ways. Read the manual. Go to a car seat tech to find out exactly how to lock out your belts and install the car seat correctly.

If you know how to do it, and do it correctly every time, then no - you don't need the extra base.

If it's a car that the child will travel a lot in (like one way from day care every day) - then yes - just go buy the base - it ensures that in a hurry, the seat will be installed correctly.
