What does it mean for a car to fail Emission/safety test?has the engine gone bad?Can it be fixed?

I did a VIN check on a used car i bought in the US and it failed Emission/safety test. Does it mean the engine is smoking or will start smoking in the nearest future? Can it be fixed? Is it a bad buy?|||Just because it failed the emissions test doesn't mean it is a bad buy exactly. More than likely it has to do with the exhaust and isn't burning off the fuel going thru it. It will probably be the catilytic converter and may need replacing. or your oxygen sensors may be bad. I hope this helps with your problem.|||Could be. In US all cars are supposed to be inspected before resale by Fed law. And has to be fixed to pass before sale. If you have no recourse to return to where you bought it, you need to get a computer scan to check for trouble codes and parameters on sensors, may have a bad sensor like 02 sensor bad. Doesn't mean whole engine bad.|||that means the exhaust/engine system is improperly tuned and in some cases the catalytic converter.

If its the converter then chances are the engine is broken and exhaust is broke permanently|||This is why you get a car inspected by an independent mechanic prior to purchase.

Failing an emissions/safety test means the car either has a problem with it's emissions system or the car is not road worthy. It can be fixed or you can get a waiver (by spending a specific amount) but generally it's not worth it on a car that's only worth 1k and you CAN'T do the labor yourself (as I recall).
