How do you feel about 1997 airbags ? My mum borrowed my car and thinks I should get a new car for my safety.?

It's a Dec 1996 Holden Commodore acclaim. I've kept the car looking nice, it's got a powerful engine and new tyres. But my parents think my car skids in the wet. They're safety obsessive and think that my car isn't worth new airbags, I should just get a new car.|||Your car isn't worth new airbags? I don't get it, did you crash your car or something and you need new ones? Or are your parents just saying that newer airbag systems are better?

A 1996 Commodore Acclaim is a pretty safe car. Your parents need to take a chill pill.

All cars slide a bit in the wet, depending on how fast you go around corners. Some tyres are better for wet weather conditions than others, I certainly wouldn't be buying a new car just because your parents say your car slides a bit in the wet. If you like your car, and I'm sure you have no reason not to, then stick with it.

EDIT:

1994 is not "back in the day".|||Don't worry about airbags. People drive around in plenty of cars that don't even have airbags. They are a luxury safety item. If your car skids on wet pavement it means your brakes are locking up and your tires are sliding which means either your car does not have ABS or Anti-lock Brakes, which is another luxury safety feature that you can survive without or you are pushing the brake too hard too quickly. If your car does have ABS however, and it is still skidding, you MUST get this fixed because some wheels may lock up while others do not resulting in pulling to one side which is DANGEROUS.|||I don't think airbags are any different now than they were back then, that is to say they still do the same job. If your car is handling poorly you might want to consider an alignment. Beyond that the decision is yours... it's your vehicle and if you feel it's safe keep it.

**Edit**

Somebody above mentioned cars not having airbags back in the day. My car is a 1994 Saturn SL1 and it has airbags. And I agree with the person who commented on the brakes, if they are locking up and you have an ABS, you might want to get it checked out. But you said you have good tires so I doubt they're locking up. Unless you don't have tires rated for wet traction??? Idk|||Car's didn't have air bags back in the day, and how many of your relatives were saved by air bags? None of mine. Drive safely.
