What are the qualifications needed for me to drive the safety car in F1?

There don't seem to be any fixed criteria - and the post doesn't come up for grabs very often. I'd say that the next safety car driver will be similar to the current one, a solid, dependable, touring car driver who has realised that he isn't quite good enough to win races regularly and has long-term ties to the manufacturer of the safety car (at the moment Mercedes).

The current driver, Bernd Mayl盲nder, was a touring car driver before starting to drive the F1 safety car in 2000. He finished 11th in the 2001 DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft). He has been associated with factory Mercedes teams since 1995.

He started in karts, then drove in the Porsche Carrera Cup, the DTM and the FIA-GT championship. His biggest win to date is the 2000 N眉rburgring 24hrs.

He holds a FIA "Grade A competition licence", which is required for the DTM and for most international series.

As to him having a superlicence, he certainly doesn't have one, as they are only granted to drivers who hold a current contract with an F1 team, which he doesn't. He probably isn't eligible anyway, not having competed enough in an appropriate feeder series [although the rules allow the FIA to award a Super Licence to a driver who does not meet the normal criteria if a vote reveals unanimous agreement by the members, and provided that the driver has completed 300 kilometres of testing at racing speeds in a current car].|||you will probably need a super license from the FIA
